Data Collection and Development for GIS

Duration : 1 Month

In this class, you will learn about concepts of GIS including spatial data structures, data sources and transfer methods, projections and coordinate systems, geo-referencing. Also related data source technologies like GNSS (GPS), total station, Mobile Mapping, Remote Sensing. Concepts presented in lecture will be put into practice through hands-on exercises utilizing the GIS software product like: ArcGIS and QGIS.

A geographic information system (GIS) had been heavily being used in India in various projects. Data collection and development is major, time consuming and vital part of every GIS project. A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS have become a tool with widespread use in developmental applications. The power of a GIS can have a positive influence in community based planning and scientific decision making for developmental activities.

After completing the course you will be able to:

  • Describe what is GIS? The terms ‘geo-referencing’ used in GIS
  • Explain data source for GIS, their benefits, drawbacks and errors
  • Describe what is GNSS, how it works and errors in GNSS?
  • Survey of utilizes, land use and other features using handheld GPS
  • Surveying with satellite imagery reference with visual interpretation and poor GNSS coverage
  • Perform precise survey for GCP collection with geodetic receiver
  • Describe what is distributed database and how to perform data syncing
  • Explain real time updating mechanism using filed client hardware
  • Understand how to perform total station surveying
  • Perform operation in QGIS and ArcGIS like geo-referencing, digitization, and topology, map composition and printing
